O Brother, Where Art Thou?

George Clooney"A journalist, an actor, a producer and a script writer" the movie industry specialist would call him; "A good son and brother, a gentleman, a best man, and a friend" his family and friends would say; "A handsome bachelor, a perfect man, a gorgeous personality and an idol" his suitors and fans would shout. It isn't the man who defines these attributes, it's these attributes which shape the actor, family man and idol George Clooney. But who is he to you and how much of his life up to this moment do you know?

Born on the 6th of May 1961 in Lexington, Kentucky, George Timothy Clooney is the son of Nina, a former state beauty queen, and Nick Clooney, a local broadcast journalist who also activated as an actor and hosted a talk-show in the Cincinnati area. This is no mere inheritance!

George has a sister, Ada, with whom he would potter around his father's sets, where he learned the more technical aspects of television. While his sister Ada was shy and didn't show any attraction towards this domain, George proved to be a natural. But it was a small incident which made George change his direction in life drastically and, even if he was raised in the TV business, he chose to quit his job as broadcast journalist after a short time. Clearly, he had bigger dreams.

George studied at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky. He was more of a sporty student than an academic one, thus becoming interested in baseball but, just when he felt this was his path, he failed to join the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. He left this road also and when college stopped from being something interesting, George put it aside as well.

The revelation that unveiled him the greatest attraction in life — acting — came when his cousin, Miguel Ferrer, offered him a small part in a feature film. It was with this occasion that Clooney finally realized that this was what he wanted to do for the rest of his days and it was then that Hollywood first became his aim.

But it's not easy getting to Hollywood, not to mention living there. So George started to work various odd jobs like selling women's shoes or cutting tobacco, until he saved enough money to purchase a rusty 1976 Monte Carlo ("The Danger Car") and, having no more than $300 in his pocket, he took to the road to his aunt Rosemary in Hollywood. She was willing to offer him a place to stay as long a George would keep on working in order to pay a part of the rent, but it seemed too boring for an ambitious man to spend his time painting fences or cutting the lawn instead of taking this chance as an actor. What he did is leave Rosemary's house and move into a friend's, where he slept in the closet. A small price to pay, you might think.

Clooney began going from audition to audition and succeeded in getting some brief roles in various TV pilots. Unfortunately, none were being approved by any network. Until he finally got a role on the Facts of Life, which didn't last very long as the series was at the end of its television life.

George went on and after Facts of Life, there came the role of Booker in Roseanne and Falconer on Sisters. You remember him as Booker, don't you? It would have worked really well if it wasn't for Clooney's good looks.

Ironically, George was too handsome for this role and, instead of hating the character Booker, as the screenplay intended, women couldn't wait to see him, no matter how mean he was. It took Clooney a couple of years of hard work and some other brief movie roles ("Red Surf", "Return to Horror High") until he finally landed on the role that later put its stamp on him.

In 1994, George received the role of the charming but troubled pediatrician Doug Ross for a new TV pilot called ER. The series dealt with the everyday life of the Dr's and the public's response was so amazing, that ER soon became a household hit and its entire cast was brought into the limelight. George finally got his recognition.

George ClooneyAlong with fame came also the curse of being scrutinized by the press. An intelligent man, George didn't pay attention to all rumors about his past life and, as the scripts kept on pouring in, he took the matter into his own hands and began deciding which role he would play and which not.

For almost 5 years, Clooney would split his time between ER and a movie set. He came across a script written by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez called "From Dusk Till Dawn" and he received the role of Seth Gecko, not an exemplary upright American citizen. The part fit George like a glove, as it revealed a whole other side of his personality and it remained in the memory of all fans as one of his best. From this point on, we all know the roles he played.

There are many reasons you might like George Clooney. I admire his charming personality as well as the fighter in him. I can see why he is nicknamed "Gorgeous George" but I can also be impressed of the way in which he has stood up for what he believes in.

It's George Clooney — the man who was in search of fame for so long — that have made a clear point regarding his relationship with the press. His public stand on his views about the paparazzi made other Hollywood's famous actors stand behind him.

His personal life makes him even more attractive and desired. Clooney has a reputation for being a ladies man and this reputation is given by his being straight forward about his opinion on marriage and kids.

After his brief marriage to Talia Balsam, he has sworn never to get married again or have kids. He says they both require commitment and, apparently, Clooney can't do only one thing his entire life. I'm sure that eventually he'll find his Mrs. Right.

It doesn't matter that he's famous now, it takes time for good things to happen. Even for you, Gorgeous George!
